Common Wildlife Pests:

Squirrels

Commonly found in attics, walls, sheds, barns, and chimneys, squirrels can annoy property owners with their noise, odors, and more. They typically gain access via overhanging branches, power lines, or by climbing your exterior siding. Squirrels can cause a substantial amount of damage, from blocking vents with their nests and causing fires, to chewing on your home’s electrical wires.

Raccoons

Due to their adaptability, raccoons have been able to use urban areas for as their habitat with ease. If you have a raccoon problem, you may notice overturned waste containers, raided fruit trees, or thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to your attic that has been used as their den. Since they can be a carrier of rabies, it is recommended to seek out a professional to remove them from the premises.

Skunks

The presence of a Striped Skunk is often first made apparent by its odor. It has well-developed anal scent glands that can emit a highly unpleasant odor when the skunk feels threatened. They will attempt to find a place to nest during colder months, which can lead to damage and unsanitary conditions on your property.

Snakes

New Jersey is home to some 22 snake species, many of which may look dangerous to humans. However, most are ultimately beneficial in the capture of rats and mice. Common non-venomous snake species include the Black Racer, Eastern Garter Snake, Milk Snake, Black Rat Snake, Eastern Ribbon Snake, Eastern Hognose Snake, Scarlet King Snake, and the Northern Water Snake which is commonly confused with the Copperhead. We are home to two types of venomous snakes – the Northern Copperhead, and the Timber Rattlesnake (Endangered). They are in the family of pit vipers. The venom of these snakes is hemotoxic, that is, it destroys the red blood cells and the walls of the blood vessels of the victim. While encountering these snakes are rare, you should take preventative measures to keep you property free of snakes and call an expert to remove any suspected pests.

Bats

The presence of bats can be detected in several ways. At dusk, when bats leave roosts to feed, they may be seen exiting through eaves, vents or from behind shutters or siding. Noise from large colonies may also announce their presence. Bats can bring with them an unwelcomed odor and, due to their size, large colonies can infest spaces like an attic, if there is a way in. Their droppings can stain, cause odors, and create unsanitary conditions.

Rats and Mice

A textbook household pest, rats and mice invade a household in the hopes of finding shelter, food, and escape from the extreme temperatures. Their nests can be found almost anywhere in your home, from in your garage or garden shed, to the interior walls of your home. Rodents carry a number of pathogens that can results in serious diseases.
